A common cause of chest pain, costochondritis is a painful inflammation of the cartilage which connects the rib to the sternum. The sharp, stabbing pain associated with this condition can be severe, worse with movement and extremely tender on palpation. Breathing hurts! Causes can be minor repeated trauma to the chest wall, excess of activities such as decorating, or moving furniture etc or sports related. Often, there is no clearly defined cause, though people with psoriatic arthritis or fibromyalgia may be prone to attacks of costochondritis. Though not serious, it can be difficult to eradicate – I used kinesiotape on this patient to provide ongoing pain relief after treatment. Acupuncture points were needled to support cartilage health and supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin can be useful to prevent further attacks – please check with your health care provider.
